CANAL Quest 2000: Trans-Leicestershire Sponsored Walk

Saturday 20th - Sunday 21st May 2000

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

1. CANAL Quest 2000 is a fund-raising event which supports : (a) LOROS (the Leicestershire Hospice); (b) Breathe easy Glenfield; (c) Cerebral Palsy (Leicestershire); (d) Leicestershire schools (conservation projects); (e) Injured Wildlife Appeal UK; (f) Dreaming 2000 conservation resource; (g) Future conservation exploration / projects.

2. Any individual may participate in CANAL Quest 2000 as a sponsored walker.

3. Children (= persons under 16 years of age) must be supervised by a legally responsible adult. An adult may supervise not exceeding 4 children.

4. Leaders are responsible for ensuring the well-being of their groups at all times, and should be capable swimmers.

5. The organisers recommend a minimum group size of 2 persons.

6. To participate, submit an official Registration Form (available from MERCURY or LOROS Shops, or from THE MAP SHOP, Leicester, or via www.matilda.mcmail.com) by 7th May 2000 to: The Administrator, CANAL Quest 2000, P O Box 9999, Leicester, LE5 2WJ.

7.All sponsors will be recorded on official sponsorship forms which will be posted to registered walkers. Walkers may pledge any of the following: (a) one or several stages on Saturday or Sunday; (b) the whole walk on Saturday (stages 1 - 10); (c) the whole walk on Sunday (stages 11 - 22); (d) the whole walk on both days (stages 1 - 22).

8.Designated route for wheelchair users = Stage 12, Mill Lane to West Bridge (Sunday).

9. All walkers will:

(a) walk northwards

(b) walk within Stages 1-3 (Saturday a.m.) and within Stages 4-10 (Saturday p.m.)

and within Stages 11-15 (Sunday a.m.) and within Stages 16-22 (Sunday p.m.).

c) start and end at places / times indicated on their application.

(d) complete only stages pledged on their application.

(e) notify a marshal at the beginning and end of their walk on each day.

(f) notify a marshal at Bridge 61 (twice if walking whole distance) and Mkt. Harborough.

(g) start after 8.00 a.m. each day (or after 7.30 a.m. if walking whole distance).

(h) finish by 6.00 p.m. each day.

(i) ensure that they are fit enough for their proposed walk. If in doubt, seek clearance from a doctor. (N.B. The towing path is generally fairly level.)

(j) equip themselves properly: hiking boots (good grip), waterproof jacket, hat, spare warm clothing, drinks (warm/ cold), sufficient food (snacks, lunch), simple first aid kit, watch, sponsorship sheet/ map, personal medication, daysac, torch (emergency), telephone (emergency, optional). Children under 10 are advised to wear a life jacket.

(k) organise own refreshments and own transport to and from designated car-parks.

(l) as far as possible use public toilets (located at start of many stages).

10. Another walking adult must verify a walker's distance on the sponsor form

11. Completed sponsorship forms, with amounts raised, should be returned to the CANAL Quest Administrator, CANAL QUEST, P O Box 9999, Leiceser, LE5 2WJ, by 11th June 2000 at latest.

12. All walkers will receive certificates at a special presentation at The Grand Hotel, Granby Street, Leicester on Sunday 25th June, 4 p.m. to 6. p.m.

13. Walkers who complete the entire 57 miles will become certificated members of the 250 club (the combined total of miles, bridges, tunnels and locks).

14. Walkers who raise at least £60 will receive specially designed CANAL Quest 2000 t-shirts.
